Tutoring service accepting students

— A new tutoring service is helping local students with unconventional schedules keep up with their schoolwork.

Steamboat Springs Aca–demy, part of the small business incubation program at Colorado Mountain College, began advertising for new clients last month. Danielle Skov, a mother and tutor who started the program, said the academy can provide help for student-athletes, such as those involved in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, home-schooled students who need extra help with their studies or curriculum planning, and students who need diagnostic testing to identify their academic strengths and weaknesses.

“We specialize in one-on-one tutoring with trained teachers,” said Skov, who works with four teachers who are available to students and their families.

One of those teachers is Anita Handing, who retired last year from the Steamboat Springs School District after teaching at the middle school. She is a licensed school psychologist who does diagnostic educational testing.

“The diagnostic testing helps us understand exactly where a student might need help,” Skov said.

The academy can accommodate students from kindergarten through high school, Skov said.

“We’re not doing college-age students because there are already those services up here at CMC,” she said.

Skov said she also hopes to work with entire families. On the first three Friday nights in March, she is offering a “family enrichment class” on Greek mythology, a topic she said has fascinated her since childhood.

“This is what’s fun for me,” Skov said. “My own kids are going to come (to the class), and my husband.”

Skov said she has seen a lack of local educational programs for families.

“I wanted to offer something that the whole family could come to,” she said. “The hope is that when they leave the class, they could all go to the library and get some books they’re interested in and look into things further as a family.”
