Tuesday rain boosts Steamboat’s July rainfall total

Tom Ross

— After a bone-dry June, Steamboat Springs now has received almost double its typical rainfall for the month of July.

A flashy thunderstorm that rumbled in from the south Tuesday night produced anywhere from 0.22 to 0.31 inches of rain in Steamboat Springs, but it did its best work in South Routt.

Weather observers in Yampa checked in with a 1.48-inch precipitation total from the storm. A station near Oak Creek measured 0.98 inches of rain. Another weather station about seven miles southwest of Steamboat reported 0.35 inches.

A Steamboat Today reader who lives north of Hayden reported no rain overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

The rainfall boosted the flows in the Yampa River from 87 cubic feet per second Tuesday afternoon to 122 cfs Wednesday afternoon. The threshold for recreational activities like tubing is 85 cfs.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction reported that July’s month-to-date precipitation in Steamboat now stands at 2.74 inches compared to the historic July average of 1.51 inches. This month’s total was boosted by the 1.78 inches that was recorded at the official measuring station on the morning of July 7. July is typically the driest month of the year in Steamboat. June saw only 0.14 inches of rain, compared to the historic average of 1.54 inches.

The precipitation reports for Steamboat and South Routt come from weather observers in a national network of volunteers called the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network established by Colorado State University.

The National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies and a high of 88 degrees Thursday. A chance of thunderstorms returns to the forecast Friday through the weekend.
