Tracy Stoddard named Strawberry Park principal

The Steamboat Springs School District on Tuesday selected Tracy Stoddard as the next principal at Strawberry Park Elementary School. Stoddard will replace Celia Dunham, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

A familiar face in the Steamboat Springs School District will become Strawberry Park Elementary School's new principal next school year.

Tracy Stoddard, who currently serves as the assistant principal for Strawberry Park and Soda Creek elementary schools, accepted the job Tuesday.

"I'm so excited, I can't even tell you," said Stoddard, who has been an educator in the district since 1997. "This job seems like a natural fit for me because I'm so passionate about the community."

Stoddard started with the district as a first-grade teacher at Strawberry Park. She also has taught second- and third-graders and has been a gifted-and-talented program specialist working in the elementary schools and at Steamboat Springs Middle School.

"I found myself intrigued with the opportunity to help raise our academic achievement in this district," Stoddard said. "The more I got into leadership roles, the more I enjoyed them."

Stoddard taught in Adams and Boulder counties before she moved to Steamboat. An avid skier, runner and mountain climber, she said Thursday she is looking forward to starting her new leadership role in August.

"I already know everyone in the district," she said. "This will be another great opportunity to work with them."

"We're excited to have Tracy become the new Strawberry Park principal," Superintendent Brad Meeks said. "Her skills, knowledge and poise really showed through, and she's going to be excellent not only for Strawberry Park but for the district."

Meeks said Stoddard was one of 29 applicants for the position.

Stoddard said she is working to obtain her administrator's license through a Colorado State University program; she expects to obtain it in May. She will replace Strawberry Park Elementary School Principal Celia Dunham, who is retiring from the district she has served for more than 30 years.

Dunham started with the Steamboat Springs School District in 1977 as a substitute teacher and was hired full-time at Soda Creek Elementary School the following year. In 1992, she started at Strawberry Park, where she has remained since. She twice was named the district's Teacher of the Year — in 1996 and 2004.
