The Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association staff: Holiday confusion
July 29, 2006
The decision to drop the name “Rainbow Weekend” from the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and Art in the Park Weekend was made by the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association marketing department on April 25, 2006, long before the Rainbow Family of Living Light announced they would be coming to the Routt National Forest.
The reason for changing the name was twofold. First, in many cases the name could be confusing for visitors; if only referred to as “Rainbow Weekend,” the name did not describe the event on its own. Second, because Rainbow Weekend was too confusing on its own, we would have to refer to the weekend by “Rainbow Weekend: Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and Art in the Park,” a significantly long name for marketing in ads, banners, calendars and other materials where space is limited.
Art in the Park celebrated its 32nd annual event this year, and the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo is in its 26th year. The two events existed for several years on separate weekends. When the two merged to the same weekend, the Chamber decided to name the weekend “Rainbow Weekend” because of all the colors associated with the events to brand the weekend. In recent years we’ve decided the name, as stated above, is more confusing than helpful. We understand that the name will not disappear overnight, however we stand behind our decision.
For anyone who has a question or concern about one of our events, we encourage a phone call to our staff at 879-0882. This allows opportunity for a direct line of communication and information sharing before misguided opinions form. Again, we welcome your feedback and hope that our message in this letter will help mitigate any future misunderstandings.
