Texas man hurt when ATV rolls over on Hahn’s Peak

Steamboat Springs — A 44-year-old Texas man was involved in a serious all-terrain vehicle accident Monday morning and was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center.
North Routt Fire Protection District Chief Bob Reilley said that the man rolled the ATV on Hahn's Peak and that the machine was still drivable after the accident. Instead of calling for help, the man rode down the mountain to the fire station near Steamboat Lake State Park at about 10:45 a.m.
"He pulled in with his friend to the parking lot," Reilley said.
Reilley said that the man had trauma to his chest and abdomen but that his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening at the time.
Reilley said that although medical treatment might have been delayed, he would have preferred the injured man not drive himself down the mountain.
"We don't want you to aggravate the injures by self-transporting yourself," Reilley said.
Routt County Sheriff’s Office records technician Mellisa Baumgartner said Deputy Paul Yonekawa investigated the incident and reported that the injured man was expected to spend Monday night at the hospital for observation. An updated condition for the man was not available Tuesday afternoon.
