Terry, Letlow advance to state semifinals
Hayden wrestlers win quarterfinal matches today in Denver
February 18, 2011
Denver — Two Hayden wrestlers advanced this morning and will wrestle starting at 7:15 p.m. tonight in the semifinals of the state wrestling tournament in Denver. Junior Chad Terry and senior Treyben Letlow will both wrestle in the semifinals for the third consecutive year.
Chad Terry won in the 130-pound quarterfinals of the Class 2A tournament by jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first period against Justin Westphal of Baca County. The Tigers junior started the second round on the bottom, but quickly worked a reverse and soon had Westphal on his back for a pin.
It wasn’t a smooth match for Letlow at 215 pounds, but he muscled his way out of any trouble and pinned Akron’s Preston Harms late in the second period. Letlow picked up an early takedown for a 2-0 lead, but couldn’t flip Harms in the first period. The pair rolled around the mat in the second period, but Letlow finally found the leverage he needed. Once he got Harms to his back, Letlow quickly got the pin.
Both wrestlers have tumultuous histories in the state wrestling semifinals.
Terry won there as a freshman at 103 pounds, en route to a second-place finish in the tournament. He lost last year in heartbreaking fashion, however. He lost, 7-6, despite having a 6-2 lead with 10 seconds remaining in the match. He’ll look to exorcise those demons tonight.
Letlow lost in the state semifinals as a sophomore, but hasn’t lost since. He won the 215-pound classification last year, finishing the season undefeated. With his quarterfinals win, he has won 69 matches in a row.
