Summit rallies past Steamboat in final regular-season game

Raya Duryea takes a shot in the first half of Steamboat's loss to Summit on Thursday night.

— It wasn't the ending senior Kady Look was hoping for, but the Steamboat Springs senior has no regrets.

"Yeah, I’m definitely glad that I came back and played with this team," Look said after the Sailors dropped the final regular season game of the season to Summit on Thursday in Steamboat 35-27.

"I was really regretting not playing a couple of weeks into the season, and looking back now, as a senior, it's been amazing. To be able to look back and say, ‘This was my last game’ — I think it was a good thing I played my last season, or I would have regretted it. This is a good start to a great program."

Steamboat had chances to pick up the win that has eluded the team this season, but Summit shook off a shaky start and rallied to take the lead with 15 points in the third quarter. The loss was Steamboat’s 23rd of the season, and the Sailors finished in last place in the Western Slope League with 11 losses.

The night started well for the Sailors, who jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead, then held an 18-15 lead at the half. But Summit's 15 points in the third put Steamboat on its heels, and the team couldn't hit the shots it needed to get back in the game down the stretch.

Summit County was led by a strong performance from Natalie Grey, who finished the night with 17 points. Steamboat's Raya Duryea had eight points, and Kady Look and Karly Lanning each added six.

"I'm not sure what to take away from tonight, but I had a great season," said Duryea, a senior. "I would say, ‘You win some and you lose some,’ but we lose some. We played really hard and improved a lot through the season, and it's unfortunate that we never got the win. … I loved playing with these girls, and I loved playing basketball.”
