Street dedication Thursday for outgoing Steamboat police chief

— A street is being dedicated Thursday in honor of retiring Steamboat Springs Police Department Chief JD Hays.

A ceremony is at 11 a.m. to dedicate JD Hays Way. The street connects U.S. Highway 40 to Pine Grove Road near the Mountain Fire Station and never has had an official name.

"If anyone deserves to have their name on a street or park, it's certainly JD," said Steamboat Police Capt. Joel Rae, who will serve as interim chief.

Speakers at the ceremony will include City Manager Jon Roberts, former City Manager Paul Hughes, City Council President Bart Kounovsky and former council President Loui Antonucci.

Hays is a veteran member of the department, having joined in 1980 as a patrol officer. He worked in Los Angeles before coming to Steamboat, and his career in law enforcement spans 37 years.

Hays was promoted to captain in 1983 and became assistant chief in the mid-1990s. In 1997, he was named the director of public safety. His job title changed to chief in 2009.
