Storm baseball team back to swing in Steamboat

Alex Adrian got his first taste last summer, and when the opportunity to return to Steamboat Springs arose this summer, he wasn't about to let it go.

Adrian was a pitching coach a year ago, his first visit to the state of Colorado, and now he's back to serve as manager for the Steamboat Storm, a summer college baseball team in its third season in Steamboat Springs.

"Last year was the first time I ever got into Colorado other than the airport," said Adrian, a coach at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix for most of the year. "I loved it up here last year. Steamboat's awesome, a great place to be during the summer, especially when it's 110 degrees down in Phoenix."

The Storm kicked off its season this week with a pair of doubleheaders. The squad went 1-1 on Tuesday in its home opener, beating Eagle Valley 9-6 in the first game and losing 9-6 in the second.

The Storm then lost a pair of games Thursday on the road in Parker, 10-6 and, in extra innings, 6-5.

They next play at home starting at noon Saturday at Emerald Park in Steamboat.

The roster this season includes 19 players from a wide swath of the United States’ Midwest and West. There's a quartet from California, five players from Nebraska and others from New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Indiana and Arkansas, plus several from Colorado. One of those Colorado players is Steamboat's own Billy Clark, a junior at Lubbock Christian College who's back home again to spend his summer playing in Steamboat.

"We have a really good squad this year," Adrian said. "We have kids from all over the place, but they're starting to come together as we get to know each other. It should be a good year."

The team will play 14 doubleheaders on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday. That all leads up to a season-ending double elimination tournament starting July 11.
