Steamboat’s reputation as an active community will be put to test during statewide fitness challenge
April 28, 2014
Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs’ reputation as an active community will be put to the test next month as the city squares off against other cities and towns in a statewide fitness challenge.
The competition is LiveWell Colorado’s Get Movin’ challenge, and it aims to get residents around the state to commit to doing at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day for 30 days.
In addition to the physical benefits, participants who stick with the program also will be eligible to earn prizes ranging from lodging in Denver to a $100 gift certificate at the Boulder Running Company.
"The goal is to get people out and moving," LiveWell Northwest Colorado community coordinator Barb Parnell said.
About 8,000 people across the state accepted the challenge last year.
Livewell is hoping for at least 10,000 participants this year.

This will be the first time cities will compete with one another, and they all will be ranked based on the average amount of physical activity time their participants log.
Parnell said the challenge doesn’t require anyone to go out and get a gym membership because there are plenty of free exercise options across Routt County.
"This is a good opportunity to try new trails they haven’t tried before," Parnell said.
She added the physical activity can be broken up in 10-minute installments throughout the day and can be as simple as walking up and down a staircase during a break from work.
"Do it right before an activity you’re really trying to concentrate on," she said.
She also recommended residents take advantage of new parks and other amenities to fulfill the daily allotment of physical activity.
In promotions for the challenge, LiveWell cites Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics that show only 52 percent of adults in Colorado log the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
Participants who need some motivation for the challenge can plug into LiveWell’s social media campaign on Facebook and by following #COgetmovin on Twitter.
The challenge runs from May 1 to 30, and participants can register anytime during the contest period.
