Steamboat’s Chief Players reveal different side of their talents

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — From melodramas, murder mysteries and one acts, the Chief Players are known for their productions of comedy and uncanny characters.

This weekend, however, they will show the more dramatic side to their repertoire.

“I believe catharsis is more powerful — and in many ways, more important — than laughter is,” said Michael Staley, director for the "The Professional" and "Accused of Comedy,” which the Chief Players will present at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Chief.

"After the success of ‘Cannibal: The Musical!’ I decided that I wanted to next bring Steamboat a Yugoslavian drama and acquaint local audiences with a type of show they’ve never seen before," Staley said.

"The Professional" by Dusan Kovacevic is a drama set after the collapse of the Yugoslavian government following the story of a book publisher who has a mysterious encounter from his past, which ends up changing his future.

"Accused of Comedy" by Carl Williams is a farce set in a place where humor has been outlawed and the telling or laughing at jokes has severe penalties.

"It's a really unique script because it deals with these issues of your memories and how much of your past life can create a shift of who you were to who you are," said Kirk Aigner, who plays the role of Teya in "The Professional."

Aigner said the undertones of each play have moments of vulnerability and show a side of the human condition that may not always be apparent.

"I was very interested in telling this universal story in a way that is fresh yet still resonates with Steamboat folks," Staley said. "I also think that after the show many people will reflect on this show much longer than any comedies they have seen."

Tickets are $16. The show is recommended for ages 12 and older due to some mature content.
