— The Steamboat Women's Rugby Club is looking for new members in hopes of playing in one of Steamboat's most recognizable tournaments.

After trying to put together a team for the past three years, organizer Anne Zoltani said she has locked up practice time at Whistler Field in the hopes of putting together a team for the annual Cow Pie Classic tournament.

The tournament is July 7, and Zoltani said the hope is to have a team ready to play in the 10s tournament.

A 10s tournament includes 10 players per side who play 10-minute halves.

"It really is for women of all ages," Zoltani said. "No experience is necessary with the group we have. I bet about 25 percent have played rugby before, and 75 percent haven't. My plan is to structure the practices around teaching fundamentals and the rules of the game."

The last two Cow Pie Classics have featured women's teams from Wyoming, Denver and Boulder.

Zoltani, who played for the Boulder Babes Women's Rugby Club the past several years at the tournament, said they always have batted around the idea of starting a local women's team.

After talking with several girls who played in collegiate and in club rugby, she said they decided to try and put together a Steamboat team.

There are 12 members on the team ranging in age from early 20s to early 40s.

Zoltani said she hopes the team is ready to compete in the June 23 Roughstock Tens tournament in Boulder.

"It really is for anybody," Zoltani said.

Practices will run from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, weather permitting.
