Steamboat volleyball wins Glenwood Springs tournament

— The Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team quickly put its season-opening loss at Montrose behind it. On Saturday in Glenwood Springs, the Sailors won the final two matches of their two-day tournament to earn their first championship of the young season.

"I couldn't be happier with our effort and the way they played together," said SSHS coach Wendy Hall. "I'm very proud of what they did this weekend, and they are feeling good about it, too."

SSHS opened the tournament Friday with a pair of wins over Montezuma Cortez and Vista Peak, earning the No. 2 seed and quarterfinal bye for Saturday. In their semifinal match Saturday morning, the Sailors defeated Denver Christian, 25-17, 25-9. The win moved them on to the championship match against Pagosa Springs, which had defeated No. 1 seed Erie in the semis.

In the final match, Steamboat shutdown Pagosa’s offense to earn the win, 25-13, 25-14, and claim the tournament championship.

"We played better with every match this weekend, I feel like, because we kept playing better teams," Hall said. "That's really nice to see progress like that right in front of your eyes."

SSHS (4-1) will play at Moffat County on Thursday before returning to Grand Junction on Friday for a match against Central.
