Steamboat to host water ski event at Bald Eagle Lake
August 1, 2012
Steamboat Springs — The Bald Eagle Lake Water Ski Club will host a USA Water Ski-sanctioned event Saturday.
The event, in its sixth year, will feature some of the top water skiers from Colorado and surrounding states.
The competition begins at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to run until about 3:30 p.m.
"Water skiing as competitive athletes is different than what most people conjure up from going out to do it recreationally," said David Hood, the chief judge and scorer for Saturday's event. "People will understand how it's scored and held as a competition."
The format involves water skiers rounding slalomed buoys. Those who do it the fastest, longest and with the shortest rope will be awarded the highest score.
The starting speed for water skiers is 15 mph with the top speed at 34 mph. Each skier will get three passes through the course.
Spectators are welcome to attend. The event will have 36 skiers in various divisions.
"It's a constant flow, and the boat never stops," Hood said. "It's the same thing all day long. There are some really good skiers showing up. The difficulty is in the speed and shortness of the rope."
