Steamboat tennis team dominates in Aspen

Girls take six of seven matches

— The Steamboat Springs High School tennis team beat up on a squad from Aspen on Thursday, taking six of the seven matches in a dual.

Steamboat's dominance in Aspen was most evident in the singles ranks, where the team barely even broke a sweat in the three matches.

Christi Valicenti won, 6-1, 6-0, against Mimi Rogers at No. 1 singles. Kylee Swiggart beat Casey Altman, 6-0, 6-3, and Mandy Thielemann dispatched Melissa Carr, 6-0, 6-0.

"All three looked awesome," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "They all played well and intense."

The Sailors also picked up easy wins at No. 3 and No. 4 doubles. Kate Cooper and Katie Ross won, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles, and Sarah Hoing and Summer Smalley won at No. 4 doubles, 6-0, 6-3.

"Kate and Katie played a great match together. That was great to see," Aragon said.

The day's closest match was at No. 2 doubles, where Steamboat's Alli Lowrie and Rachel Grubbs outlasted Hannah Feuer and Liz Seubert, of Aspen, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

"Both of those young ladies really stepped up," Aragon said. "Rachel hit some great shots and played as well as I've seen her play, and so did Alli."

Kayla Hansen and Maggie Brown, of Aspen, secured their team's only victory. They took the tiebreaker in the first set and kept Steamboat's Lauren Siegel and Sara Bearss from rebounding, eventually winning 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.

"We hit the ball well, and Sara served as well as she ever has, but (Aspen) hit some lobs and we didn't respond well," Aragon said. "Still, it was a solid team effort by everyone. We were really pleased."

Steamboat returns to the court at noon today at Evergreen.
