Steamboat Telemarker grabs World Juniors podium
March 26, 2014
Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs has been home to a strong Telemark racing program, and last weekend, Tanner Visnick kept that tradition alive, earning bronze in the FIS Telemark World Junior Championships in Geilo, Norway.
Visnick was third in the classic race, building on a European trip during which he raced in a pair of World Cup events.
"I was hopeful because classic is my best event and it was my last chance to podium," Visnick wrote in an email.
Classic races involve a long stretch of giant slalom gates, then a skate-skiing portion at the bottom of the course.
"The hill was steep and icy, my favorite!" he wrote. "During the race, I felt strong and although it wasn’t my best skiing, I didn’t make any big mistake. When I crossed the finish line, I wasn’t sure if it was enough. Then several minutes later, the announcer announced that I was third in juniors and I was overcome with joy."
Visnick will continue his European adventure this week, competing in the World Cup finals.
"Regardless of struggles throughout the season, I achieved my season goal," he wrote.
