Steamboat teen honored by Optimist Club
January 30, 2012
Steamboat Springs — The Optimist Club of Steamboat Springs' January Teen of the Month is a captain of her high school's Alpine ski team and an avid swimmer. Steamboat Springs High School senior Mallory Hoots also carries a 3.9 GPA and has coached for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club since 2007.
In high school, she has regularly made the honor roll and is a member of the Link Crew Club and Rotary Interact club. She also takes college courses at Colorado Mountain College's Alpine Campus and expects to be just three credits shy of being classified as a sophomore when she starts college in the fall.
After high school, Hoots told the Optimist Club she would like to study science at the University of Wyoming and then attend a graduate school with the intention of becoming a physician's assistant at an orthopedic office — because "she loves bones and joints." She currently is weighing acceptance offers from Colorado State University and the University of Wyoming.
Hoots also is a member of Routt County 4-H and has each year volunteered to help clean the Elk Mountain Cemetery, sections of U.S. Highway 40 and the Yampa River Core Trail for a community service project. The senior also has worked for seven years as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Old Town Hot Springs.
She was honored by the Optimist Club at a Jan. 24 meeting.
