Steamboat teams collect postseason honors

Lacrosse, soccer and baseball squads rack up awards

— A successful season just keeps getting better for the Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team, which had nine players picked for the All-Mountain League team.

Seniors Lance Ostrom, Eric Trousil and Tyler Saxe were named to the first team; seniors Jake Miller, Wilber Ranieri and John Wharton were named to the second team; and senior Alec Gantick, junior Christian Ramirez and sophomore Ben Wharton were named to the honorable-mention team.

"I'm really pleased," said coach Bob Hiester, who was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. "It's a good reflection in terms of our season and our players."

The Sailors also handed out individual team awards. Peter White was named the most improved player, Miller was the most inspirational and Ostrom was the most valuable player.

The team finished the season 15-2 and won the first playoff game in program history. The team's seniors finished their high school lacrosse careers having never lost a Mountain League game, a span that included winning four straight titles.

Girls soccer earns awards

After a playoff berth and a respectable showing in the first round of the state playoffs to powerhouse Broomfield, the Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team placed four girls on the Western Slope All-League team.

Leading the way was senior first-team selection Sydney Bauknecht. Junior Megan Stabile also was named to the first team.

Sarah White and Kelbi Rogers were named to the honorable mention team.

Steamboat finished the season 10-5-1 overall and 7-4-1 in league play. The team won its final game of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs.

Glenwood Springs' Michaela Mansfield was the Player of the Year, and Glenwood coach Steve White was the Coach of the Year.

Baseball earns 3 nods

The Steamboat Springs High School baseball team came within a couple of wins of making the state playoffs. For its work, the team placed three of its members on the Western Slope All-League team.

Junior Thomas Kelly and senior Tommy Lyon were named to the second team, while junior Justin Ditter was named honorable mention.

The team finished the year 9-10 overall.

Palisade's Cole Cummings was the Player of the Year, and Palisade skipper Steve Moore earned Coach of the Year.
