Steamboat Symphony Orchestra program features stars from Broadway’s “Wicked”

Gabriela Barrientos Valencia, a junior at Steamboat Springs High School, works with Michael McCorry Rose, who was featured in the cast of Broadway’s "Wicked" during music theater immersion workshops, hosted by the Steamboat Springs Symphony Orchestra.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs Symphony Orchestra is hosting its first music theater immersion workshops for Steamboat Springs High School students this week.

With a schedule that consists of coaching, seminars and production rehearsals, the week culminates at 7 p.m. Sunday in the SSHS auditorium with a sneak peek performance of the group’s October musical theatre production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.”

Not only were students working with Steamboat Symphony Orchestra conductor Ernest Richardson, who is directing their upcoming performance, but they also had the rare opportunity to participate in master class workshops with vocalists Tiffany Haas and Michael McCorry Rose, who were both featured in the cast of Broadway's “Wicked.”

"I think students here are the most fearless young people I've ever met," said McCorry Rose. "Everyone is just diving in with total abandon and a can-do spirit that is so refreshing."

During the workshops, students had a chance to rehearse songs for their upcoming performances with McCorry Rose teaching them how to prepare for auditions and mark music.

For Gabriela Barrientos Valencia, a Steamboat junior, it was an eye-opening experience in which she felt a deeper connection to the music.

"This is a brand new thing for me," Barrientos Valencia said. "This has helped me get a better idea of how I should do things and what I need to work on. They are really helping us reach a point that we are striving to be at."

"The truth is, I think I ended up learning more than they did because they're coming at it with fresh eyes and ears while I encounter many of these things each day," said McCorry Rose. "But their fresh perspective on that teaches me something. They're asking those curious questions that I kind of stopped asking."
