— Steamboat Springs’ Team Lightning swim team ran away with the overall title at the June 26 and 27 Aspen Invitational.

Steamboat scored 2,247 points, a full 400 points more than second-place Glenwood Springs Team Sopris Swimming Club.

Steamboat was the top team in the girls division and second in the boys division.

“It was another great meet,” Steamboat coach Essi Kenttala said. “There were 14 teams, which is more than usual. There was a lot of competition there for us.”

Three local swimmers led the way at the meet, finishing as high point winners in their divisions. Avery Harrington was the high point winner in the girls 9 and 10 division, Frank Ruppel was the high point winner in the boys 11 and 12 division, and Amy Brodie was the high point scorer in the girls 15-and-older division.

Avery Harrington won the 100-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle. Ruppel won the boys 200 backstroke, 100 fly, 50 fly and 100 back, while Brodie won the girls 200 individual medley, 100 fly and 50 free.

Also picking up wins were Amanda Walker in the girls 10-and-younger 100-yard freestyle, Kendall Harrington in the girls 6-and-younger 25 free, Samantha Terranova in the girls 11 and 12 500 free, Tyler Terranova in the boys 11 and 12 500 free, Lucas Coon in the boys 7 and 8 25 back, Margaret Lichtenfels in the girls 11 and 12 200 free, and Ty Kortas in the girls 50 breaststroke.

“The Steamboat kids are awesome,” coach Sara Barry said. “They kept taking off time, and it shows their hard work.”

The team next competes July 9 to 11 in Craig. Kenttala said the plan is to take 87 swimmers to the meet.

“This is one of the last-chance meets,” she said. “The plan is to peak at the Craig meet.”
