Steamboat Springs tennis team falls in Fort Collins
March 29, 2013
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team fell at Poudre on Friday, 5-2.
Steamboat No. 2 singles player Ellie Bender won in straight sets, while the No. 2 doubles team of Katie Spencer and Shealie Jenkins also won in straight sets.
"The match was much closer than the score," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "As the match went on, we played better. We were close. But, here again, we need more time on the court."
Steamboat hadn't played in two weeks, its last match March 14 in Grand Junction.
Despite the loss, Steamboat was competitive in nearly every spot. In three of the Sailors' losses, the match went to three sets.
"We're getting better but still have work to do," Aragon said.
The team doesn't get much of a reprieve Saturday.
The Sailors play at 11 a.m. at Fossil Ridge before a 2 p.m. match at Thompson Valley. Aragon said both teams will provide competition, saying Fossil Ridge "is absolutely loaded."
He said the long layoff played a role Friday but said what the team needs is more matches.
On Saturday, "it'll be fun," he said. "It will be great for our girls to experience this level of competition. We need to learn and get better with each match."
