Steamboat Springs swimmer Samantha Terranova swims for Team Colorado

Steamboat Springs — Her times weren't as good as she had hoped and she didn't finish quite where she wanted, but Samantha Terranova learned a good lesson over the weekend at the Western Zone Age Group Championships in Grand Junction.
Terranova, a rising Steamboat Springs High School freshman, was nervous going into the swim meet that brought select teams in from around the region.
But after competing, Terranova knows she wants more of what she experienced in Grand Junction.
"I really want to qualify for bigger meets," she said. "I really want to get all my times a lot faster than they are now."
Terranova competed in the 1,500-, 800- and 400-meter freestyle. In order to qualify for the team Terranova had to hit select qualifying times in her age division.
After an already successful season, the 14-year-old began with the 1,500, where she finished 12th in 19 minutes, 39 seconds. Although the time was more than 40 seconds slower than her fastest time, she was happy with the result.
In the 800 and 400, Terranova said she went out too hard before falling off her pace.
That was another lesson Terranova took from her races.
"I learned I can't take it out as strong as I can," she said. "I need to pace myself and build up to the pace I need to do."
In the 800 she finished 13th in 9:59, two seconds off her best time. In the 400 she was 16th in 4:52, eight seconds slower than her previous best.
Regardless, Terranova said it was quite the experience being on Team Colorado. The team held off the Pacific team by 12.5 points to get the win.
"You're really trying to win not just for yourself, but the team," she said.
The meet wrapped up Terranova's season. She'll take a break this fall before picking up her training in the winter.
"I wasn't in the top 10, which was a bummer," she said. "I want to go and be in the top 10. I want to go to these types of meets and do better."
