— The annual Steamboat Springs Shoot-Out is back, with three high school basketball-filled days packing the gyms at Steamboat Springs High School.

Six teams for both boys and girls this year will compete Thursday, Friday and Saturday, six games a day at the high school, down from the eight teams the tournament has fielded in recent years.

“It’s kind of a crazy year. We usually have our tournament on a different weekend, but the season is pushed back a little this year, so there are a lot of other tournaments. We didn’t get the amount of teams we wanted,” Steamboat boys coach and athletic director Luke DeWolfe said. “It doesn’t change anything. It’s still three games against quality opponents.”

For both the Steamboat boys and girls basketball teams, the weekend is a chance to fortify what have been strong starts to the season. Both squads enter the tournament undefeated, 3-0. Neither has played a close game yet, though that should change quickly.

Steamboat’s girls open the weekend at 5:45 p.m. Thursday playing in the new gym against Green River, Wyo. The Sailors won a matchup against the Wolves a year ago in the Steamboat tournament, 34-30, en route to a third-place finish.

An adjusted format to accommodate six teams per bracket already has Friday’s game set, too. There, Steamboat will draw Discovery Canyon for a 7:15 p.m. game.

The boys begin play at 7:15 p.m. Thursday against Montezuma-Cortez. The Panthers have started well, too, winning two of their first three games. They’re coming off a 63-58 win against Delta. The team is led by senior Brackin Whiteskunk, who’s averaged 19 points a game in the early going, and Taylor Wilson, who’s scored 12.7 a game.

On Friday, Steamboat plays Montrose (1-2) at 5:45 p.m.

“Both are quality opponents. Both return a lot of kids from last year, and they’ll both be solid,” DeWolfe said. “In the early season, this is a great opportunity to work on somethings and find out where we’re at against really solid 4A opponents who we’ll possibly see later in the year at the district tournament.”

Steamboat beat both opponents in the tournament a year ago, Montezuma-Cortez 50-26 in the opening round and Montrose 42-34 to place third.
