Steamboat Springs School Board to consider technology contract

Scott Franz

— The Steamboat Springs School Board on Monday night could sign off on a $97,000 deal to have Steamboat manage the technology needs of a neighboring school district.

South Routt this school year contracted Steamboat to manage some of its technology maintenance, but the new deal would completely consolidate the two districts’ technology departments.

“The big thing we gain is access to (Steamboat’s) whole department and expertise,” South Routt Superintendent Scott Mader said last week. “I don’t think we can run up against any problem here that they won’t be able to fix.”

The South Routt school board on Thursday voted unanimously to approve the contract offer.

Mader’s district currently pays Steamboat $45,000 to manage some of its tech needs, and it funds one full-time technology employee. If the Steamboat school board approves the one-year contract Monday night, the larger district would hire two additional tech staff members. One would work in Soroco full time and replace the district’s current employee, and the other would float between both districts.

“Anything we can do to collaborate with other school districts is a good thing,” Soroco school board member Gena Hange said Sunday. “(Steamboat) has so much to offer.”

The two districts also are planning to connect their computer networks via radio connections between Yampa, Oak Creek and Emerald Mountain.
