Steamboat Springs’ Maggie Rose Carrigan wins 1st NorAm

— Maggie Rose Carrigan crossed the finish line at a NorAm parallel slalom event in Giants Ridge, Minn., looked to her side and didn't see anyone.

For Carrigan it was a first.

The 16-year-old Steamboat Springs High School sophomore had won the first NorAm competition of her young career and did so by beating mentor and teammate Mimi Wiencke to win the event.

"It was practically an honor," Carrigan said. "It was really cool to race with her and chase her. It was really crazy that I beat her. I never felt that I would do that."

Carrigan led the way for a strong showing from Steamboat.

On the men's side, Justin Reiter won the slalom and giant slalom events, and Mike Trapp finished third both days.

In the giant slalom, Wiencke won and Carrigan was third.

But the highlight was Carrigan's first win.

"I'm just ready to take my snowboarding to the next level," she said.
