Steamboat Springs jumpers fly in Utah

— The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's Nordic combined squad earned a number of top finishes in Park City, Utah, on Friday during the first day of the Junior National competition.

Tyler Smith led the way in the J1 boys division, winning the Nordic combined race. Ben Berend was second, Aleck Gantick was third, Jake

Barker was fourth and Fritz Carpenter was fifth.

Berend won the special jumping competition at the J1 level.

Park City's Colton Kissel won the J2 boys Nordic combined event, finishing ahead of a pair of Steamboat skiers, Jasper Goode in second place and Nicholas Madden at third. Steamboat's Koby Vargas was fourth in the special jumping.

Natalie Bohlmann, meanwhile, won the J2 girls Nordic combined and was second in the special jumping.

"We had a pretty good day," Steamboat coach Gary Crawford said. "It

was a good competition and a beautiful day."

The action resumes Monday with an elimination jump. The athletes will compete Tuesday in team jumping and Nordic combined events.
