Steamboat Springs High School sports fundraising kicks off
Booster Club helps high school after funding structure changes
August 18, 2010
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs Booster Club kicks off its first big fundraiser of the year today with the sale of the Steamboat Sailors Gold Cards.
The $20 cards contain discounts to local restaurants and retail shops across Steamboat. Sales begin today and will end with Blitz Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, when athletes will be walking around downtown with the cards.
The fundraiser kicks off a new year for the Booster Club, which has seen the Colorado High School Activities Association make several changes to the way fundraising is done at schools.
To fall more in line with Title IX regulations, all the Booster Club funding will be approved by Athletic Director Luke DeWolfe and administered through the club.
"Fundraising will be equally divided between boys and girls and goes through the athletic director so it's fair and equitable," Booster Club President Elizabeth Flaharty said. "We have to be able to document everything in how it's distributed out."

The Booster Club helps raise funds for school athletics and clubs. In all, the Booster Club helps fund 37 clubs, activities and sports.
"We want to get the word out to what the Booster Club does," Flaharty said. "People think we just support football, but we try and provide a positive activity experience for youth all the way around. It's not just for sports."
As part of the new initiative, Flaharty said the hope is to do three big fundraisers a year directed by the Booster Club. Flaharty said they hope to do this in part so businesses that are inundated with multiple requests have the chance to help programs throughout the year.
She also is looking for people to join the Booster Club or volunteer. The cost to join the Booster Club is $30 a year and goes to help Tier 2 sports.
