Steamboat Springs High School golf team wins again
August 16, 2012
Steamboat Springs — Well, this is getting repetitive.
The Steamboat Springs High School golf team goes to a tournament, and it wins. For the fourth straight event, Steamboat finished as the top team in its classification or as the top team overall.
On Thursday, there was no better team.
Steamboat shot a team score of 228 at Gypsum Creek Golf Course. The team also finished with the low medalist in Erik Sobeck.
On Wednesday, Sobeck tied for low medalist honors but finished second because of a scorecard playoff. On Thursday, he left no doubt.
Sobeck fired a 1-over par 73 to finish first.
Brandon Martin shot 76, Andrew Firestone shot 79, Casey Weston shot 84 and Sam Scheer shot 89.
Assistant coach Andrew Donner said the course played fair Thursday. He said it was pretty straightforward, save for a four-hole stretch.
There, Donner said, player after player lost strokes. He said that was the stretch where Steamboat played some of its best golf.
"Quite a number of kids had disaster holes," he said. "We avoided those big disasters. We grinded out pars."
Although it’s early in the season, Steamboat continues to make its mark as one of the top teams in Class 4A. The team has proven it has three players capable of shooting in the low to mid-70s each time out.
"When we show up to a tournament, people know who they are," Donner said. "They know who they have to shoot for. Erik Sobeck is becoming a known name at these tournaments with back-to-back wins. I've had a couple of coaches talk about how good his game is, and he's not close to being as good as he can be."
The team resumes play Friday in Rifle.
