Steamboat Springs High School golf team struggles Thursday

Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School golf team struggled Thursday at Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose, carding a team score of 236.
The score left the Sailors in the middle of the pack but gave the team its first look at the course for the state tournament, which is Oct. 1 and 2.
The course didn't play hard, but too many mental errors cost Steamboat.
"Just way too many thrown away shots," coach Steve Dodson said. "We've got a lot of work to do to clean up our rounds if we're going to be competitive."
Erik Sobeck, a junior, shot a 2-over par 74. He made four birdies but struggled around the green in carding six bogies.
"I'm happy with it, but the way I hit the ball today could have been a couple strokes lower," Sobeck said.
Sam Samlowski shot an 80, Brandon Martin shot an 82, and Sam Scheer shot an 84. Andrew Firestone shot an 80 but was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard.
Dodson said the team as a whole struggled off the tee box, with its pitch shots and putting. He said as the team moves forward, those will be the primary areas of concentration.
"That's the evils of golf," he said. "You're going to have some bad shots. You have to minimize your mistakes. We seemed to maximize them" Thursday.
The team continues play on Wednesday at Yampa Valley Golf Course in Craig.
