Steamboat Springs High School golf team hosts only home tournament Thursday

Luke Graham

— The Steamboat Springs High School golf team hosts its lone tournament of the season Thursday at Haymaker Golf Course.

Beginning at 9 a.m., the Sailors will host nine teams and more than 50 players.

The tournament, moved back a week after Haymaker hosted the Colorado Golf Association Senior Stroke Play Championships, will serve as the last tuneup before the all important regional golf tournament.

“I approach (the tournament) as protecting our home turf,” Steamboat coach Steve Dodson said. “I want to see our guys perform and win our home invitational. We’ve got a couple of guys battling it out to see who earns a spot on the regional team. There is still a lot at stake. We want to be going in the right direction going into next week.”

Steamboat’s junior varsity team also will compete. The junior varsity got some tournament experience Tuesday in Meeker, when the team finished third.

With the regional tournament slated to begin Monday with a practice round at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez, Dodson said picking only four golfers for the tournament remains a tough decision.

Erik Sobeck and Brandon Martin consistently have been the Sailors top golfers this year, each winning tournaments this season.

Dodson said the focus is to win Thursday and go to Cortez with confidence.

“We want them to grind away and compete hard,” he said. “Hopefully, good numbers will come of it.”

Thursday’s tournament should run until about 2 p.m. Spectators are welcome.
