Steamboat Springs golf team’s string of early success continues
August 15, 2012
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School golf team continued its torrid start to the season Wednesday by finishing atop the Class 4A field.
Steamboat carded a team score of 229 at the Eagle Vail Golf Club. Aspen was the top overall team, scoring 228.
"No one had ever seen the course, which makes what they did all the better," said Andrew Donner, Steamboat's assistant coach. "I just told them to not get too overly aggressive. If they weren't sure what to do, then play it safe."
As it did Monday, Steamboat again had a player in contention for low medalist. Erik Sobeck shot a 2-over-par 73 to finish tied for first, but he ended up finishing second as a result of a scorecard playoff.
Andrew Firestone shot 76, Brandon Martin and Casey Weston shot 80s, and Sam Scheer shot 90 for the Sailors.
Despite the wind picking up in the morning, the day turned out to be perfect for golf.
Donner said in addition to never having seen the course, Eagle Vail features elevated tee boxes and plenty of target golf.
"There was some up and down to it," he said. "Picking what club to hit made it that much more difficult. But they put themselves in a favorable position out there."
The finish marks the third consecutive tournament in which Steamboat has led the Class 4A field.
Although the season is in its early stages, Steamboat now has to be considered the top Western Slope 4A team.
"I would think so," Donner said. "The results are speaking for themselves. Every tournament it seems like we have guys in the hunt to win. It's great it's been different guys at every tournament, too."
The team continues tournament play Thursday at Gypsum Creek Golf Course.
