Steamboat Springs girls tennis opens season with win
March 14, 2013
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team opened up the 2013 season Thursday in Grand Junction with a 6-1 win against Durango.
The Sailors, who were scheduled to open up last weekend but didn't because of weather, got wins at all the doubles spots and two singles spots.
"As a team, we played well," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "We had some first-match nerves, but we got over those as the match went on. We're pleased to come through and see the way they finished."
No. 1 singles player Rachel Grubbs and No. 2 singles player Ellie Bender each won in straight sets.
The No. 1 doubles team of Katie Spencer and Malia Fraioli, the No. 2 doubles team of Brooke Metzler and Shealie Jenkins, the No. 3 doubles team of Hanna Haggarty and Maddie Labor and the No. 4 doubles team of Sydney Boyd and Surina Techarukpong all won in straight sets.
Kira Lorenzen, at No. 3 singles, lost in three sets.
The team now prepares for the two-day Western Slope Open. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Friday and runs through Saturday. It usually draws some of the top teams from across the state, serving as a litmus test in the early season.
"The weather is great," Aragon said. "The season is on, finally, and we're playing."
