Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team wrapped up play at the Western Slope Open on Saturday, walking away with two top-four finishes.
The Sailors were led by the No. 3 doubles team of Maddie Labor and Hanna Haggarty. The duo finished third and narrowly missed the finals.
The No. 1 doubles team of Katie Spencer and Malia Fraioli were fourth, and No. 2 singles player Ellie Bender just missed playing for fifth place.
As a team, Steamboat finished in fifth place with 125 points. Fairview won the tournament with 195 points, Ralston Valley was second with 159, and Heritage was third with 157 points.
"We had matches that were close, and coming into the semifinals we were right there," Steamboat coach John Aragon said. "We almost had five players in the semifinals. We lost two matches in third-set tiebreakers. We'll just keep working and improving as a team."
The tournament usually draws some of the top teams from across the state for two days of action.

Aragon said he used the tournament to see where his team stood. Going forward, he said, he wants his singles players to work on their serves and the doubles players to be more aggressive at the net.
Although Steamboat didn't finish high in many spots, Aragon said the tournament was a good thing for the team.
"We want to have the results at the end of the season," he said.
Steamboat's next scheduled match is at 4 p.m. March 29 at Poudre. Aragon said he is trying to set up a home match for Friday or Saturday of this week, but he wasn't sure whether he could secure it.
