Steamboat Springs boys tennis team struggles through weekend
August 31, 2013
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School boys tennis team wasn't able to walk away with a win during the weekend as it continues to try and find its most effective lineup.
But after getting swept Friday against Fossil Ridge, the team played better Saturday against Poudre.
On Saturday, Steamboat got wins at No. 3 singles from Ben Wharton and at No. 1 doubles from Quinn Cain and Zach Dunklin.
"The key was intensity," Steamboat coach Don Toy said. "That was primarily the difference. We're proud of the kids and their effort."
Toy said the team would work on volleying and serving to particular points of the court before a busy week.
The team preps for one of its more action-packed weeks.
Steamboat leaves Thursday for Grand Junction, where it will play Air Academy and Durango that afternoon.
The team then plays in the Western Slope Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction. The tournament usually draws a vast field, including several of the state's top teams as well as several of Steamboat's regional foes.
