Steamboat Springs boys hoopsters topple Basalt

Luke Graham

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team improved to 2-0 on Saturday, easily dispatching of Basalt, 51-27.

The Sailors struggled early, leading just 12-11 after one quarter, but they eventually put together a run in the second quarter to pull away for the win.

“We did what we needed to win,” Steamboat coach Luke DeWolfe said.

The Sailors led 25-13 at the half and busted things open in the third quarter. DeWolfe said midway through the third quarter he was able to use most of his bench.

Eleven of Steamboat’s 13 players scored, led by sophomore Brody King’s 11 points. Junior guard Carter Kounovsky chipped in with 8 points.

“We have the possibility of having some depth,” DeWolfe said. “We were able to push the pace. It was nice to see us attack a team in multiple ways.”

Steamboat should be tested more this week. The team next plays Thursday when it hosts the annual Steamboat Shootout.
