Steamboat soccer falls in 2nd round to Air Academy
October 29, 2011
It's hard to read Saturday's Steamboat Springs High School soccer score as a 6-0 loss.
Sure, the team lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Air Academy, ending its season.
But Steamboat had its chance.
The Sailors gave up an early goal in the first 10 minutes but controlled the pace of play in the second 30 minutes of the first half and found itself down 1-0 at the half.
"We went into the game and measured the game in 10-minute segments," Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said. "We lost the first 10 minutes. But the second 10 and third 10 were our best moments. … We had them chasing the game. The last 10 minutes of the half were neutral. We went into halftime feeling really good."
The Kadets came out in the second half and scored on a header off a corner in the first 10 minutes. The Sailors, now down 2-0, changed to a 3-4-3 formation to get more players forward and give them a chance at a comeback.
Air Academy was able to take advantage of the numbers and make it a lopsided game.
Bohlmann said the game and the scoreboard weren't indicative of how well Steamboat played. He said the Sailors had opportunities but just couldn't capitalize.
"As coaches, we were bummed for them," Bohlmann said. "It's been such a successful group. It's such a great team, such a great team. A lot of those things you can't describe. It's something you feel. I mean, it was such a great team."
In other Western Slope League action, Battle Mountain downed Sand Creek, 7-1, on Saturday. The team plays Evergreen — who it lost to in the playoffs last year — in the next round.
