Steamboat soccer breezes to 7-4 win at Eagle Valley

— The Steamboat Springs High School soccer team closed out a busy week Saturday, breezing to a 7-4 win at Eagle Valley.

The Sailors, who were tired after a busy week on the road, took a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.

"We got into the second half, and by that time after (Friday and Saturday) the legs got heavy," Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said. "But the group did a great job hanging on."

Vincent Kretzschmar and Mac Noel each had a pair of goals, and Lance Ostrom, John Vande Velde and Ryan Walker each had one.

Eagle Valley at one point was able to close within 5-3, but Steamboat would score the next two goals to put it away for good.

Steamboat (8-1-1 overall, 5-0-1 in league play) remained a game ahead of Battle Mountain in the Western Slope League.

The league got a huge win Friday when Battle Mountain beat No. 5 Cheyenne Mountain, 4-2.

The win should give a little more respect to the league once playoff brackets are released.

"That's a great result for them," Bohlmann said, "and it's great for our league."

Steamboat next plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at home against Palisade.
