Steamboat snowboarders shine at Copper competitions

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Less than two weeks into 2018 and the snowboarders with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club have already posted a series of strong results from competitions around the state.

OK, the first in the series actually came on New Year's Eve, but the club walked away with a pair of winners and several other high finishes from the New Year's Eve rail jam at Copper Mountain.

Marty Boyd helped lead the way, winning the boys 14-and-over division. Teammate Jake Suchowski was seventh and Rowan Drake 12th.

Rochelle Weinberg also won her division, the 9-and-under girls class. Gigi Boyd was ninth in the girls 10-13 division while Jackie Clemente was 22nd in the boys 10-13 class.

Last weekend, the team was back at Copper Mountain for two days of competition.

On the first, the team had six athletes score well in a halfpipe event.

The next day, many of those same athletes shined in a slopestyle competition despite a healthy dose of fresh snow waiting on the course and a serious temptation to ride off that course and into the powder.

Juneau won her Menehune girls division. Lightner was seventh in the same competition. Weinberg was second in Grommet girls, Connor third in junior women, Duty eighth in Menehune boys, Jesse Hamrick sixth and Clemente 19th in Breaker boys and Suchowski 16th in youth men.
