Steamboat slalom skiers race into top 10 as NCAA Skiing Championships move into 3rd day

Steamboat Springs — Two former Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Alpine skiers raced into the top 10 on Friday in the slalom at the NCAA Skiing Championships at Snow Bowl in Middlebury, Vt.
Hig Roberts, a junior at Middlebury, was in 10th place after the first run and moved into sixth place in the final results with a combined time of 1 minute, 40.13 seconds. Max Marno, a sophomore who races at the University of Denver, also improved his standing by moving from 12th after the first run to 10th overall.
University of New Mexico sophomore Joonas Rasanen won the race after finishing with a combined time of 1:38.96. Middlebury senior David Donaldson, who led the first run, finished second at 1:39.24, and University of New Hampshire junior Sam Coffey came in third with a time of 1:39.75.
On the women’s side, University of Denver freshman Kristine Haugen collected her second NCAA title of the week after leading the first run and then holding on in the second to win the women's slalom title. Haugen took the giant slalom title Wednesday.
Haugen took the lead in the first run with a time of 48.67 seconds and then posted the sixth-fastest time in the second run to hold onto the title with a combined time of 1:37.97. She was chased by Vermont freshman Kristina Riis-Johannessen, who held onto second place with a combined time of 1:38.02. University of Denver Freshman Tianda Carroll moved from ninth in the first run to third overall by posting the fastest second run time. She finished with a combined time of 1:38.27.
Former Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club skiers Cassady Roberts and Mary Rachel Hostetter finished 15th and 20th, respectively. Roberts, a senior who skis for Colby College, finished in 1:40.69, and Hostetter, a senior who skis for the University of New Mexico, finished in 1:41.60.

Friday’s slalom concluded the Alpine portion of the NCAA Skiing Championships. Steamboat’s Mary O’Connell, a freshman at Dartmouth College, will race in Saturday’s 15-kilometer freestyle event. She placed second in the women's 5-kilometer classic event Thursday.
