Steamboat skiers shine at cross-country event

— Emily Hannah highlighted the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's results Wednesday at the Olympic venue in Soldier Hollow, Utah, with a fourth-place finish in the mass start cross-country race at the Junior National Championships.

The top Winter Sports Club skier on the men's side was Max Scrimgeour in eighth for J1 men.

Hannah just missed the podium in the J1 women's division, placing fourth in the mass start race, which was held on a 10-kilometer course. Winter Sports Club coach Brian Tate said Hannah was in the lead or second place for most of the race before falling off the pace on the final climb up the notorious Hermod's Hill.

New England skier Corey Stock raced to first place in the women's race in the final kilometer to earn the win with a time of 29 minutes, 20.6 seconds, according to http://www.faster Other notable Winter Sports Club finishes included Gretchen Burkholder in ninth and Abbey Habermehl in 12th in the J2 women's class.

Patrick Caldwell, of Stratton Mountain School in Vermont, topped the men's field in 24:39.3 according to Steamboat's Charlie Von Thaden was ninth in the OJ class.

On Monday, several Winter Sports Club skiers posted top times in the classic sprint race, which also was held at Soldier Hollow.

Steamboat's Mary O'Connell raced to the podium with a third place finish in the J1 women's race. Lucy Newman was fifth, Hannah was sixth, Madison Keeffe was eighth, and Dori McNeill was 11th. Haley Piske was 10th in the women's OJ class, and Burkholder was 10th in the J2 class.

Scrimgeour topped the Winter Sports Club's results on the men's side with a seventh place finish in the J1 class. Teammate Evan Weiman was ninth in the J1 class, and Von Thaden was 13th in the OJ class.

In other cross-country skiing news, Steamboat Springs skier Mary Rose placed 31st for the University of Colorado in the NCAA skiing Championships in Bozeman, Mont.
