Steamboat skiers notch top finishes in Winter Park

— Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club freestyle skiers recorded a number of top finishes at an event last weekend in Winter Park.

Payton McElhiney, Robby Brown, Sammy Schuilling and Logan Banning all emerged with first-place showings.

Banning was tops in both the 16- to 18-year-old half-pipe and slope-style competitions. McElhiney won the 10 to 12 half-pipe competition and was fourth in slope-style. Brown was tops in the 13 to 15 half-pipe event and seventh in the slope-style. Schuilling, meanwhile, won the 10 to 12 slope-style group and was fourth in half-pipe.

Plenty of other local competitors placed well.

John Satterfield was third in the 13 to 15 half-pipe and 22nd in slope-style. Jesse James Pugh was fourth in that same division in half-pipe and 20th in slope-style. Jake Sear was fifth, right behind both of them, in half-pipe and took 10th in slope-style. Andy Schuilling was third in the 9-and-under slope-style. Kai Doyle was fifth in the 10 to 12 slope-style, Colton Cramer ninth and Ethan Dyer 16th. Connor Smith, meanwhile, was 17th in the 13 to 15 slope-style and Chris Kowynia 19th. Lennon Vaughan was third in the men's open slope-style.

"It was a fun event," coach Joe Love said. "The kids had a blast. There was a lot of really tough competition there. These up and coming skiers all have bright futures if they stick with it and work hard."
