Steamboat skiers dominate at Vermont events

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A pack of Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Alpine skiers made the trek to Burke Mountain, Vermont for U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team's National Performance Series through the last week and came away undefeated and nearly unchallenged.

The event including training opportunities as well as four events for the U16 skiers, two slalom races and two giant slalom races for both boys and girls, and the Steamboat skiers set up camp on the podium, winning five of the eight races.

On the boys side, Steamboat accounted for 10 of the 12 podium spots available for the entire week.

Several different racers came away with major highlights.

Jack Reich was at his best in the giant slalom events, winning both of them. He also was third in one slalom and ninth in the other.

Cooper Puckett won one slalom race and was second in a GS. Cam Owens was second in both slalom races. Nico Richeda won one slalom race, was second in a GS and was 10th in the other slalom.

Marat Washburn was top-10 in three of the week's four races and Cole Gedeon was fifth in both slalom and giant slalom.

On the girls side, Izzy Washburn was very strong, especially in giant slalom. She won one event and was second in the other. In slalom, she placed ninth in one race and 11th in the other.

All those fast finishes earned the skiers some big-time opportunities. Eleven top athletes from the series were invited to compete in Europe as a part of the Seven Nations Cup, facing off against U16 athletes from around the world. Puckett, Richeda, Reich, Owens and Izzy Washburn all were named for that trip.
