Steamboat School Board to honor teachers

— The Steamboat Springs School Board will host a reception Monday night to honor its four teachers of the year. Less celebratory will be its continuing budget discussions for the 2012-13 school year.

Teachers to be honored Monday include Strawberry Park Elementary School's Diane Yazbeck, who was selected as the district's overall teacher of the year; Soda Creek Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Kelaine Sowards; Steamboat Springs High School math teacher Anne Barbier; and Steamboat Springs Middle School science teacher Lisa Lorenz.

The reception starts at 5:30 p.m. at the George P. Sauer Human Services Center on Seventh Street.

After the reception, the board will continue to discuss the district's budget for next school year.

School Board President Brian Kelly said the board will be briefed on how Steamboat's District Accountability Committee has ranked the budget proposals for each of the district's campuses and departments.

"Right now we're waiting for more information from the Legislature," Kelly said, referring to the annual school finance bill decided by state lawmakers. "Then we'll decide what we can fund at 96 percent, 98 percent and what we fund with an enhancement package, if anything."

Leave of absence

Kelly said the board also would briefly discuss board member Wayne Lemley's temporary leave of absence, which Lemley announced last week.

Lemley, who ran uncontested for the School Board's District 2 seat, is dealing with a custody issue that he has described as temporary. He said he planned to miss the board's next two meetings, beginning with tonight's meeting.

Kelly said the district consulted with its attorney and the Colorado Association of School Boards last week and determined the board does not need to take formal action to approve Lemley's leave. Kelly also said the leave is a private matter.
