Steamboat School Board to hear survey results

Students asked about drug use, physical health in spring

— Results from a survey that asked Steamboat Springs sixth- through 12th-graders questions about topics ranging from substance abuse to physical health will be presented to the School Board tonight.

Dervla Lacy, executive director of Grand Futures Prevention Coalition, will present Steamboat Springs School District student results from the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey Routt County Community Report. Grand Futures serves Moffat, Grand and Routt counties and works to promote healthy lifestyles through alternatives to substance abuse.

In spring, 852 sixth- through 12th-graders in Routt County were surveyed about substance abuse, delinquency, personal safety/violence, school and family, mental health and physical health. High school students also were surveyed about sexual behavior.

Some of the countywide results were released in late October. It was up to each district whether to release its results.

Superintendent Shalee Cunningham has said the district participates in the survey every two years.

“It is imperative that we get as much information as possible about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use related to our students,” she said. “The best learning occurs when students are alert, well fed, engaged in healthy exercise and are ready to learn.”

The countywide results indicated that fewer students drank alcohol, smoked marijuana or used prescription drugs than students did in 2008. The survey was anonymous and optional.

Also at tonight’s meeting, the School Board will consider the final 2010-11 school year budget, and Cunningham will present the district’s requests of the Education Fund Board, which will hear initial funding requests Wednesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in rooms 113 and 114 at Centennial Hall.
