Steamboat School Board to discuss health care clinic

Scott Franz

— The Steamboat Springs School Board will meet Monday night in a workshop to discuss a proposal to add a health care clinic to their school district as early as next school year.

Superintendent Brad Meeks said the clinic that would allow teachers to visit a physician in the district for episodic illnesses and checkups as part of their benefits package would be modeled after an in-district health care facility he helped launch last year as superintendent of the 6,400-student Farmington Area Public School District in Minnesota.

He said the clinic is a response to a 23 percent increase in the cost of the district employees’ health insurance premiums.

“We have to be innovative because we are all trying to hold down our health care costs,” Meeks said. “We think (the clinic) is going to be viable, and people are excited about it. It has a great potential to pull down our costs.”

He said Friday that the George P. Sauer Human Services building, which houses the district’s administrative staff, is a potential site for the clinic that could open as soon as this fall.

The School Board will discuss the proposal in detail at its workshop Monday, and Meeks said he would answer any questions it might have about the clinic.

Also at Monday’s workshop, the School Board will meet in executive session to discuss contract negotiations with Meeks, who started with the district in July. The board last month voted unanimously to offer Meeks an extended contract.
