Before they kick off a workshop with their new superintendent tonight, the Steamboat Springs School Board will decide whether to grant planners of a proposed bicycle training course access to land owned by the school district.

The bike group last month asked the School Board to let them use a dirt trail on school district property that borders the site of their proposed park on Whistler Road. The land where the proposed park would be built is on Mount Werner Water and Sanitation District property. The bike group estimates a three-week construction period during which the school district’s trail would be used for vehicular access.

The School Board heard from opponents and proponents of the park at a meeting last week. Board members said their charge was not to decide whether the park’s construction was appropriate, but to weigh whether it was in the best interest of the district to allow the park’s planners to temporarily use its land.

Board workshop

Also tonight, the School Board will kick off a two-day workshop that aims to better acquaint superintendent Brad Meeks with board members.

The board will start tonight’s work session by discussing Steamboat’s CSAP test results released last week. Other topics for discussion include the district’s budget and finances, and strategic planning for the upcoming school year.

Board member Lisa Brown said the meetings would give Meeks the opportunity to hear the board’s priorities for the upcoming school year.

“It really serves as an introduction,” she said. “We’ll be looking at how we can work together to continue building on the strengths of our school district.”

Board members said last week that their workshop, which continues Friday morning at the Yampa River Botanic Park’s Trillium House, also would allow community members interested in running for the School Board to get a taste of what it’s like to serve.

Deb Ginesta, the school district’s election official, said Wednesday that she hasn’t received any applications for the three seats that are up for a vote in November. Brown and Laura Anderson announced last month they would not seek re-election, and board President Robin Crossan has not yet announced whether she will run again. Potential candidates have until Aug. 26 to pick up an application, and they must gather the required number of candidate petition signatures by 4 p.m. on that day.
