Steamboat runners compete well at meet

— With lots of inexperience, the Steamboat Springs High School cross-country team was sure to have its share of struggles.

But considering the field, more than 300 runners dotted each the boys and girls field Saturday at the pre-state meet at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds, and the heat, temperatures were in the high 80s, coach Andy Reust came away from the first meet of the year pleased.

“We did fine for our first meet,” Reust said. “With so many kids not running before, it takes time. It’s a learning curve.”

On the boys side, Jack Burger posted the best results, finishing 15th overall.

Asher Rohde finished 38th, Jeff Sperry finished 92nd and Colton Lewer was 198th.

On the girls side, Madi McKinstry paced the Sailors with a 137th place finish.

Cassidy Fox, Skylar Weir, Liza Stout, Dominique Powers and Anne Poirot also ran for Steamboat.

“It’s the biggest (meet) they’ll see the whole year,” Reust said. “There won’t even be that many at state. Next meet, they’ll probably see half that many.”

Reust said outside of McKinstry, the rest of the girls team went out too fast. The course featured a downhill beginning, before the second mile started a gradual assent.

“They will get better because they’re all hard workers,” Reust said. “They work at it. They’ll get better, no doubt in my mind. They’re too good of athletes to not get better.”

Steamboat’s next meet is Sept. 17 at the Liberty Bell Invitational at Heritage High School.
