Steamboat police seek help finding robbery suspect

— The Steamboat Springs Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding an armed robber and those who have broken into nearly 40 cars in the past week.

A $1,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of the man who robbed the Southside Station at gunpoint on June 10.

"At this point we really need the community's help in identifying this guy," Steamboat Springs Police Department Chief Joel Rae said.

He encouraged residents to take a close look at the surveillance video. Rae said people should look at the robber's mannerisms, his clothing or any other clues. Police have no solid leads at this point.

Anyone with any information can call Routt County Crime Stoppers at 970-870-6226. Callers can remain anonymous.

Anyone with information about the cars that have been broken into may also be eligible for a cash reward.

In the past week, there have been 37 reports of unlocked cars that have been entered and items taken in the vicinity of Walton Creek Road. The thefts were reported on June 12 and Sunday and likely occurred the previous night.

"We don't know that they're connected, but that's a possibility," Rae said.

The odd thing about the thefts is that primarily cash and coins have been taken, and valuable items such as an iPad and a purse were not taken.

"It tells me that this person is looking for cash for whatever reason," Rae said.

He encouraged people to call police if they see anything suspicious.

"We need good neighborhood watch people out there, and we need people to start locking their cars," Rae said.
