Steamboat police officer given summons after car crash

— An on-duty Steamboat Springs Police Department sergeant was issued a summons to appear in court for careless driving causing injury after being involved in a car accident Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred at about 11 a.m. at Central Park Drive and Mount Werner Road. Colorado State Patrol investigated the crash. Trooper Brandan DiGeorge said Sgt. Gerard Geis was turning left onto Mount Werner Road in the direction of the ski area when he clipped a car that was stopped in the left turn lane at the stoplight on Mount Werner Road.

"It just looked like he turned short and went into their lane and hit them," DiGeorge said.

Geis' patrol car, a 2007 Chevy Tahoe, hit a 2004 Honda Pilot occupied by a couple from Golden Valley, Minn. Robert Mattison, 64, and his wife, Sharon, 60, were taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center with minor injuries.

DiGeorge said Geis had a green light, and it appeared the Honda was stopped in the appropriate place in the turn lane. The patrol car did not have its emergency lights on, and Geis was not responding to a call, DiGeorge said.

Geis referred questions about the crash to DiGeorge.
