Steamboat police have suspect in car theft

Person reportedly stole and then crashed SUV in February

— After a Jeep was stolen and crashed Feb. 27, police officers found an iPod in the car that has led police to a suspect who has since left the state. Steamboat Springs Police Department Detective Nick Bosick said they are now working to get another court order to make the man supply a DNA sample to compare to DNA found in the wrecked car.

At about 1:44 a.m. Feb. 27, a red Jeep reportedly was stolen from outside the Old Town Pub as musicians were loading musical equipment into the car. A short time later, police found the SUV crashed and unoccupied near the 13th Street Bridge.

The iPod found inside the SUV did not belong to the Jeep’s owner, and Bosick said police got a court order to get the name of the owner from Apple. From there, they tracked the suspect to North Carolina.

Bosick said the man, who originally is from the Chicago area and lived for several years in Steamboat Springs, said he would voluntarily submit to a DNA test. That was about a week ago, and police said he has not done so.

Bosick said he spoke to the man on the phone and the man said he was not in Steamboat at the time of the crash — a fact Bosick said he plans to verify using phone records.
